cimoio Java Migration: End of support for Java 8 and migration to Java 21
Why a Java migration is necessary for the cimoio LMS
With the end of support for Java 8, critical security updates will no longer be available, which poses significant risks for a central Training Management System (TMS) like cimoio. An overview of supported Java versions can be found directly on the Eclipse Adoptium website. To ensure that cimoio remains secure, stable, and high-performing in the future, the migration to Java 21 is taking place, which will be supported at least until December 2029.
Impact on cimoio releases
- The upcoming Release 4.3 (planned for November/December 2025) will be the last version running on Java 8.
- Starting with Release 5 (planned for January 2026), cimoio will run exclusively on Java 21.
- The first release based on Java 21 will remain compatible with the last Java 8 version, ensuring a smooth transition.
What does this mean for our cimoio customers?
- Hosting at STL GmbH: If you are using our hosting solution, we will handle the migration to Java 21 in the background – no action required on your side.
- Self-hosting: Customers operating cimoio on their own should coordinate the Java migration early on with their IT department and our team.
What STL provides for migrating your release to Java 21
-
Setup of a modern development environment based on Java 21
-
Review and adjustment of all system components for compatibility
-
Replacement of outdated, no longer supported functions with current solutions
-
Ensuring that all Java libraries used are compatible with each other and with Java 21
-
Enhancement of our build processes to ensure cimoio can be reliably built, tested, and delivered with Java 21
-
Development of a concept for updating runtime environments for both hosting customers and self-hosted systems
