FAQ – LMS/TMS & Qualification Management with cimoio

What is the difference between LMS and TMS?
An LMS (Learning Management System) primarily manages digital learning content and e-learning courses. A TMS (Training Management System) focuses on planning, administration, and execution of training sessions (schedules, rooms, participants, resources). cimoio combines both, making it ideal for holistic training management.

How does cimoio support qualification management?
Expected and achieved knowledge, skills, and certifications can be systematically managed using Qualification Management. Qualification gaps become visible, relevant training (in-person or online via the LMS) is suggested, and progress is documented.

Who are the in-person trainings for?
From beginners (basics) to user trainings (e.g., learning plans, templates, report wizard) to administration – there are formats for teams, power users, and admins. Trainings take place over two intensive days with direct face-to-face communication, ensuring no question goes unanswered.

Who are the webinars for?
For anyone who wants to learn in compact, weekly sessions without travel: users of all experience levels, team leads/HR for qualification management, content owners for digital learning materials and plans, and admins for refreshers. Especially suitable for distributed teams, remote/part-time models, and anyone who wants to immediately apply what they learn. Each series consists of 4 sessions on the same weekday (via MS Teams) with practical exercises between sessions and dedicated Q&A time.

cimoio LMS: Migration from Java 8 to Java 21

cimoio Java Migration: End of support for Java 8 and migration to Java 21

The cimoio Learning Management System (LMS) is continuously evolving to ensure security and future readiness. An important step is the migration of cimoio LMS from Java 8 to Java 21, as support for Java 8 will end in December 2026.

Why a Java migration is necessary for the cimoio LMS

With the end of support for Java 8, critical security updates will no longer be available, which poses significant risks for a central Training Management System (TMS) like cimoio. An overview of supported Java versions can be found directly on the Eclipse Adoptium website. To ensure that cimoio remains secure, stable, and high-performing in the future, the migration to Java 21 is taking place, which will be supported at least until December 2029.

Impact on cimoio releases

  • The upcoming Release 4.3 (planned for November/December 2025) will be the last version running on Java 8.
  • Starting with Release 5 (planned for January 2026), cimoio will run exclusively on Java 21.
  • The first release based on Java 21 will remain compatible with the last Java 8 version, ensuring a smooth transition.

What does this mean for our cimoio customers?

  • Hosting at STL GmbH: If you are using our hosting solution, we will handle the migration to Java 21 in the background – no action required on your side.
  • Self-hosting: Customers operating cimoio on their own should coordinate the Java migration early on with their IT department and our team.

What STL provides for migrating your release to Java 21

  • Setup of a modern development environment based on Java 21

  • Review and adjustment of all system components for compatibility

  • Replacement of outdated, no longer supported functions with current solutions

  • Ensuring that all Java libraries used are compatible with each other and with Java 21

  • Enhancement of our build processes to ensure cimoio can be reliably built, tested, and delivered with Java 21

  • Development of a concept for updating runtime environments for both hosting customers and self-hosted systems

By when should the migration be completed?

We recommend that all customers switch to a release with Java 21 no later than December 2026. This ensures that your cimoio Learning Management System remains secure and future-ready.
